Construction workers must be aware of the dangers that lurk

As a construction worker, you show up to work every day with the idea that you'll remain safe at all times. Not only do you take steps to make this happen, but you also expect your employer to do the same.

Unfortunately, bad things often happen on construction sites. In addition to serious injuries, many people are killed in construction accidents every year.

Common causes of accidents

If you have worked in the construction industry for any period of time, it's safe to assume that you're familiar with the top risks. Even so, this doesn't mean that something can't sneak up on you when you least expect it.

Here are some of the many dangers lurking on a construction site:

  • Slip and fall. This is exactly what it sounds like. You don't see it coming, but a piece of debris pops up and causes you to fall. This doesn't always lead to an injury, but it has the potential to cause broken bones, serious abrasions, or a concussion among other injuries.
  • Fall from height. Do you work on a ladder? How about scaffolding? Do you often find yourself on a roof? If you work at height, any fall to a lower level can lead to serious injury or even death.
  • Falling objects. Although you may not be working at height, others on the site could be doing so. If something falls from above, such as a piece of heavy equipment, it could injure someone standing below.
  • Equipment accidents. There are many types of equipment and tools used on a construction site. If the equipment is used the wrong way or defective for any reason, it can cause injury.
  • Fire or explosion. This isn't something many construction workers think about, but either one could happen at any time.

With so many potential causes of an accident, you always need to be on your toes.

If you suffer an injury, regardless of the cause, don't hesitate to receive medical attention. You need to find out what's wrong and receive treatment that will allow you to avoid additional harm.

From there, you can learn more about the workers' compensation system and how to apply for benefits. You'll want to file a claim right away, as the money you receive can help you get by until you are able to return to work. If your initial claim is denied for any reason, take immediate action by filing an appeal.

In the end, what matters most is that you receive the compensation to which you're entitled.
