Why you should always report injuries that happen at work

Maybe you slipped and fell on a wet surface. Maybe you were hit by a piece of machinery and knocked out for a few seconds. Everything seems O.K. right now. You don't want to make a big deal about a small incident. However, failing to report these kinds of accidents when they happen at work can prove to be a major mistake.

Sometimes, work-related injuries can take time to manifest symptoms. If you fail to report the accident, you may not receive the coverage you need later. That's why it's so important to file a report every time you suffer any kind of accident on the job, even if the injuries seem mild.

Not only will it ensure that your employer tracks accidents and safety needs accurately, it protects you if your injuries worsen over time. Work injuries should be covered by workers' compensation, but only if your employer has a record of the accident.

Little injuries can lead to major problems

Symptoms for many trauma-related injuries can take time to develop. Traumatic brain injuries are a perfect example. After a blunt trauma to the head, a person may feel fine. Swelling and other untreated issues, however, can result in damage that manifests weeks after the accident. Symptoms vary depending on the person, the location of the injury and the severity of the injury. They include difficulty sleeping or sleeping too much, headaches, ringing in the ears, dizziness/balance issues, mood changes or mood swings, seizures, vomiting, confusion and slurred speech.

Those who experience a fall or injury could also end up developing issues. Small fractures may not be immediately obvious but can worsen over time as you keep working.

Other conditions, like Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, can result from an injury to an extremity or a limb. These debilitating conditions will require medical treatment and may keep you from working. That is why it is important to always report accidents at work. If you realize after several weeks or a couple of months that your injury was worse than it seemed, you may have trouble filing a claim.

Help navigating workers' compensation

If you have a serious medical issue as a result of a work injury, you should speak with an experienced New York personal injury and workers' compensation attorney. Your lawyer understands the application process, as well as the requirements for adequately documenting severe medical conditions like traumatic brain injuries and Complex Regional Pain Syndrome. Reporting the accident to your employer helps ensure you can receive the benefits you need to recover after a delayed injury.
